Individual Learning Plan
2013-2014
My personal and professional goals are:
1. Progress toward MPT admission by identifying 3 individuals that could provide me with a favourable reference letter by October 20, 2013
2. Progress toward UBC MPT admission by securing the letters of reference and transcripts needed to apply to the physiotherapy programs at UBC, U of A, and U of M by Nov 1, 2013
3. Improve my attention and focus by getting at least 8 hours of sleep on Sunday and Wednesday nights from October 1, 2013 to December 5, 2013.
4. Improve my physical health by drinking a full bottle of water everyday from October 1, 2013 to December 5, 2013.
How do I achieve these?
1. Keeping them in my phone to give me ample opportunity to consistently view and, if necessary, re-evaluate them
2. Monitoring progress/performance towards each goal in a journal entry
3. Removing distractions that limit progress towards the goals
My top 3 competencies:
1. Communication
2. Teamwork
3. Research and Analysis
Gaps in my top 3 competencies:
1. Public speaking still induces anxiety
2. Taking time to check-in with other teammates to see how they feel and how they are progressing
3. Getting caught up in details and losing focus on the “big picture”
My bottom 3 competencies:
1. Project and task management
2. Managing Information
3. Social responsibility
Gaps in my bottom 3 competencies:
1. Lack of ability to multitask and continually switch focus
2. Researching and interpreting information is quite time consuming
3. Social contributions have been quite varied and short-term
My job/career ideas at the moment?
Physiotherapy
My job/career targets and how do I achieve these?
My main professional goal is to gain admittance into the MPT program, preferably at UBC. It is worthy to note that the physiotherapy-specific competencies are arguably a complete overlap of the UVic 10 core competencies, as shown in my competency assessment.
Looking at my top 3 competencies, I bring good communications skills, commitment to teamwork, and good research and analysis skills to each encounter that I would have with a client. I think these are valuable assets to have but I am not satisfied with remaining stagnant in my pursuit of these competencies. I must admit that, having better information management as well as project and task management skills would have obvious, practical uses in a physiotherapy career. For example, physiotherapy research would demand better information, project and task management skills. Being more socially responsible would give me a better connection with the community I work and live in, keeping me aware of social influences on my clients and clients’ communities. Having said all that, I can address the gaps I have in these competencies by adopting some fairly simple behaviours. If I start making a daily practice of reading the paper/periodical to increase my awareness of the current, socially relevant issues in my community, I would then be giving myself the opportunity to let another competency that I am stronger in (communication) aid in improving this competency when I am discussing a particular social issue with clients, co-workers, friends, etc. By adopting a practice of organizing each new task in terms of classification, target, priority, and collaborators, I could effectively improve task and personal management skills, making me a better team member and a more productive worker. Lastly, by continually drawing from and relying on information management skills that I have developed in University, and placing a time-limit on future information collection, analysis and review, I could decrease the time it takes me to manage information. This would free up time to pursue personal goals or focus on continuous learning opportunities.
